Do I need to pass the theory test before starting my driving lessons? What happens if I fail my theory test before taking the practical driving test? Is the theory test included in the intensive driving lessons package? These are some of the most common questions we hear from future learners.
What is a theory test?
A theory test is a written examination that assesses a learner’s knowledge and understanding of road rules, safe driving practices, and hazard awareness. You must take this test before you book your practical car driving test. The UK theory test comes in two parts: multiple-choice questions and a hazard perception test. You need to pass both on the same day to get your certificate.
The multiple-choice section includes 50 questions. You need to answer at least 43 correctly. Then, there’s the hazard perception part. You’ll watch 14 video clips and spot developing hazards as fast as possible.

You don’t technically need to pass your theory test before starting your intensive driving lessons – but it’s much better if you do, especially if you wish to have your practical driving test relatively soon after the course. We recommend to take the theory test about a month prior to the start of the course.
Can you still book your driving course before passing theory? Absolutely. From our experience, many learners book their crash course in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Bristol and Exeter much in advance, and do their theory in the meantime.
