Proven fuel-saving techniques

Want to pay less for your fuel? Do you care about the environment? You can do both. Here are some straightforward ways to help you use less fuel every time you get behind the wheel.

Drive smoothly

One of the easiest ways to save fuel is to avoid sudden acceleration and harsh braking. When you speed up quickly or slam on the brakes, your car uses more petrol or diesel. Instead, try to accelerate gently and brake softly. Planning ahead is key. Look well down the road and anticipate traffic changes so you can keep your speed steady. This not only saves fuel but also makes your journey safer and smoother!

Keep your speed steady

Driving at a steady speed helps your engine work efficiently. On motorways, using cruise control is a great way to maintain a constant pace. This avoids the extra fuel your car burns when speeding up and slowing down repeatedly. If you’re driving on country roads or in town, try to stay within speed limits and avoid unnecessary speeding. Generally, driving at moderate speeds between 45 and 55 miles per hour (where allowed!) gives the best fuel economy for most cars.

Shift gears early and wisely

Paying attention to your gear use is a small change that makes a big difference. If you drive a manual car, shifting into higher gears early reduces the engine’s revs and saves fuel. The faster your engine spins, the more fuel it uses. So, it’s best to change up through the gears as soon as you can without straining the engine. For automatic cars, easing off the throttle when climbing hills lets the gearbox shift to higher gears sooner, which also saves fuel.

Keep your car well-maintaned

A well-maintained car runs more smoothly and uses less fuel. One simple but often overlooked factor is tyre pressure. Underinflated tyres increase resistance on the road, forcing your engine to work harder. Checking your tyre pressure regularly can improve your fuel efficiency by up to 3%. Besides tyres, changing your air filters, spark plugs, and engine oil on time also helps the engine perform better. Scheduling regular services is a smart investment in fuel savings.

Plan trips and lighten your load

Combining errands into one trip saves fuel because a warm engine runs more efficiently than multiple cold starts. Before heading out, remove unnecessary roof racks, boxes, or heavy items from your car. These add extra weight and increase wind resistance, making your engine work harder. Being mindful about what you carry and how you plan your journey makes a difference.

10-Day Course

(For beginners or those starting fresh)

Who would benefit most from this course?

This course is intended for individuals with little to no driving experience and includes a total of 40 hours.

The 10-day course is most suitable for clients who meet one of the following:

  • have no prior driving experience but are confident in their ability to learn quickly (note that 4 hours per day can be very exhausting, even with a break halfway through);
  • have taken driving lessons, but still feel the need to start “from scratch”;

Please note, learning to drive is a very individual process and you might need additional lessons after your course, if you are not safe & test ready.

Intensive driving courses are a great way to learn quickly, but they may not suit everyone. If you prefer a slower pace or find long sessions (around 4 hours a day) tiring, you might benefit more from regular lessons.

These courses require focus and energy, as the fast progress and upcoming test can feel demanding. However, with motivation and good concentration, many learners find them an excellent way to achieve success in a short time.

7-Day Course

(For those who know the basics)

Who would benefit most from this course?

With a total duration of 30 hours, this course is suitable for clients who meet one of the following:

  • have completed at least 10 hours of driving lessons with an approved instructor recently (e.g., within the last 6 months);
  • have undertaken at least 10 hours of private practice recently (e.g., within the last 6 months) and mastered the basics;
  • have taken a driving test within the past 4-10 years, but failed

Participants in this course should have a grasp of basic skills, including clutch control, moving off and stopping, dealing with easy junctions, progressive braking, gears, and easy hill starts.

Please note, learning to drive is a very individual process and you might need additional lessons after your course, if you are not safe & test ready.

5-Day Course

(for learners who are intermediate)

Who would benefit most from this course?

This course totaling 20 hours, is designed for intermediate clients who meet one of the following:

  • have taken at least 20 hours of driving lessons with a qualified instructor recently (e.g., within the last 6 months) and feel about halfway to being test-ready;
  • have engaged in extensive private practice in a safe and legal way (e.g., lessons with family) amounting to a minimum of 20 hours recently (e.g., within the last 6 months) and feel about halfway there;
  • have experience driving various vehicles (e.g. farm vehicles) on private land from a young age, are comfortable with car control, and just need experience on main roads;
  • had many driving lessons and have failed a driving test within the past 3 years;

Participants in this course should be confident in fundamental car skills, including clutch control, gears, hill starts, negotiating easy junctions, maneuvering through easy roundabouts, and performing at least one of the maneuvers.

Please note, learning to drive is a very individual process and you might need additional lessons after your course, if you are not safe & test ready.
