Understanding the theory test expiry rule
In the UK, your theory test certificate is valid for two years from the date you passed it (see more information here). You must book and take your practical driving test within that period. If your theory test expires before your practical test date, the DVSA will cancel your booking, and you’ll need to pass the theory test again before rebooking.
This rule ensures your road knowledge and hazard awareness stay current and relevant. Unfortunately, there are no exceptions. Once your theory expires, it’s gone.

What happens to your course if your theory expires?
Your driving lessons can still go ahead, even if your theory expires partway through or shortly after the course. You’ll just need to postpone the practical test until you pass the theory again. This way, you don’t lose the benefit of your training or the time you’ve invested.
However, keep in mind: if you’re not yet test-ready by the end of your course, and your theory test expires shortly after, there may not be enough time to take extra lessons before the expiry date. This is especially important if your instructor has limited availability for additional hours.
