City Driving: common hazards and safe driving tips

City driving can be difficult for new and learner drivers. Busy streets, unpredictable traffic, and congestion can turn a simple trip into a stressful experience. However, with the right preparation from a good driving school in the UK, driving in the city can be easier than it seems. Whether you’re beginning your driving journey in Glasgow or Bristol, these tips will help you master city driving safely and confidently.

Stay calm in traffic

Traffic is inevitable in cities. Rush hours, unexpected road closures, and heavy pedestrian crossings can slow you down. The key is to stay calm and patient.

Getting frustrated or making sudden decisions can lead to accidents. If you miss a turn, don’t panic. Continue driving until it’s safe to make a U-turn or find an alternative route. Being patient and thinking ahead ensures a safer, less stressful drive.

Tip: If you find yourself feeling tense, pull over safely when possible, take a few moments to relax, and then resume your journey. This will help you avoid making rushed or unsafe driving decisions.

Avoid lane switching

Constantly changing lanes can be risky, especially in heavy traffic. It can confuse other drivers and lead to accidents. Stick to your lane as much as possible, and only change when necessary and safe. In cities like Glasgow, where road layouts can be less or more complex depending on the area, staying in your lane and planning turns ahead is essential.

Tip: If you’re new to city driving, consider taking driving lessons with a reliable driving courses company to learn how to manage lane discipline and other key skills.

Manage parking effectively

Parking in the city can be challenging, especially for new drivers. Spaces are often limited, and restrictions can vary from street to street. The best way to improve your parking skills is through practice. Consider taking a short refresher driving course that focuses on the maneuvers you find most difficult, such as parallel parking or reversing into tight spaces. This experience can boost your confidence and make parking less stressful.

Tip: If you struggle with parking, practice during quieter times of the day when there’s less traffic around. This will help you get comfortable without the pressure of a busy street.

Stay alert and anticipate hazards

City streets are bustling with various road users—pedestrians, cyclists, buses, and more. Keep your eyes on the road, and frequently check your mirrors to stay aware of your surroundings. This will help you anticipate sudden stops, lane changes, or pedestrians crossing unexpectedly.

In cities like Aberdeen or Glasgow, where roads can be narrow and crowded, staying alert is key to avoiding collisions. Pay special attention near bus stops, pedestrian crossings, and cycle lanes, as these are areas where people may suddenly step out or change direction.

Tip: When driving in busy city areas, adopt a defensive driving mindset. Expect the unexpected and be ready to react calmly to sudden movements from other road users.

Practice makes perfect

New drivers often feel anxious when faced with the complexity of city driving. Practice is the best way to overcome this. If you’re taking driving lessons in the UK, ask your instructor to guide you through busy areas. This helps build confidence and makes you familiar with city driving conditions. For example, a good driving course in Glasgow includes lessons on navigating through roundabouts, bus lanes, and pedestrian-heavy areas, all of which are common urban challenges.

Refresher lessons are also a great idea if you’ve passed your test but still feel nervous about driving in busy cities. With over 25 approved driving instructors, Pass in Days can help prepare you for the urban test routes and daily city driving.

10-Day Course

(For beginners or those starting fresh)

Who would benefit most from this course?

This course is intended for individuals with little to no driving experience and includes a total of 40 hours.

The 10-day course is most suitable for clients who meet one of the following:

  • have no prior driving experience but are confident in their ability to learn quickly (note that 4 hours per day can be very exhausting, even with a break halfway through);
  • have taken driving lessons, but still feel the need to start “from scratch”;

Please note, learning to drive is a very individual process and you might need additional lessons after your course, if you are not safe & test ready.

Intensive driving courses are a great way to learn quickly, but they may not suit everyone. If you prefer a slower pace or find long sessions (around 4 hours a day) tiring, you might benefit more from regular lessons.

These courses require focus and energy, as the fast progress and upcoming test can feel demanding. However, with motivation and good concentration, many learners find them an excellent way to achieve success in a short time.

7-Day Course

(For those who know the basics)

Who would benefit most from this course?

With a total duration of 30 hours, this course is suitable for clients who meet one of the following:

  • have completed at least 10 hours of driving lessons with an approved instructor recently (e.g., within the last 6 months);
  • have undertaken at least 10 hours of private practice recently (e.g., within the last 6 months) and mastered the basics;
  • have taken a driving test within the past 4-10 years, but failed

Participants in this course should have a grasp of basic skills, including clutch control, moving off and stopping, dealing with easy junctions, progressive braking, gears, and easy hill starts.

Please note, learning to drive is a very individual process and you might need additional lessons after your course, if you are not safe & test ready.

5-Day Course

(for learners who are intermediate)

Who would benefit most from this course?

This course totaling 20 hours, is designed for intermediate clients who meet one of the following:

  • have taken at least 20 hours of driving lessons with a qualified instructor recently (e.g., within the last 6 months) and feel about halfway to being test-ready;
  • have engaged in extensive private practice in a safe and legal way (e.g., lessons with family) amounting to a minimum of 20 hours recently (e.g., within the last 6 months) and feel about halfway there;
  • have experience driving various vehicles (e.g. farm vehicles) on private land from a young age, are comfortable with car control, and just need experience on main roads;
  • had many driving lessons and have failed a driving test within the past 3 years;

Participants in this course should be confident in fundamental car skills, including clutch control, gears, hill starts, negotiating easy junctions, maneuvering through easy roundabouts, and performing at least one of the maneuvers.
